Aestiva Source Code Q&A Frequently Asked Questions Do I get my source code for my installation? What do you mean by source code? How do you decide which source code I get? Why not provide all the code behind an application? Why does Aestiva distribute source code at all? Where is my source code stored? How do I make sure I get my source code? Does the source code give me operational independence? Answers Do I get my source code for my installation? Yes. As a customer you get all the source code created for your exclusive use. These source code files do not constitute the licensed application and therefore are not governed by the your End-user License Agreement (EULA). Top What do you mean by source code? By "source code," we mean the underlying English-lke HTML/OS language script specific to your application. We do not mean the underlying instructions that define the HTML/OS language itself or the underlying database and workflow engine. Top How do you decide which source code I get? You get all the source code created specifically for you. You do not get the source code used in the underlying Aestiva licensed product(s). The source code you get defines the difference between you and another Aestiva customer with similarly licensed product(s). Top Why not provide all the code behind an application? The code behind Aestiva's licensed products are one of Aestiva's most valuable intellectual properties. As a vertical software company, a solution can include the use of an Aestiva database and/or workflow engine. Aestiva does not release the code of its database and workflow engines nor sell it, or put it in escrow -- for the protection of Aestiva and its entire customer base. Top Why does Aestiva distribute source code at all? Having your source code gives you the freedom to make changes to your application with the help of knowledgeable programmers. Aestiva believes customer relationships are better-served if Aestiva's customers have the freedom to utilize outside programmers. Without the source code you would not have that freedom. Top Where is my source code stored? The source code created for your exclusive use is accessed when running your application. This is because your source code files run "interpreted." The files are are stored in the folder where your application runs. The source code application files are available by clicking the application file name in the Aestiva File Manager. If a file belongs to the underlying licensed product then, when you click on it, a message indicating the file cannot be accessed, is provided. Top How do I make sure I get my source code? You do not need to take any actions to ensure you get your source code. It is automatic since your application would not run unless the source code was included. Aestiva's production team does not "compile" your source code to ensure it remains readable. Top Does the source code give me operational independence? No. Although source code can contribute to operational independence, true operational independence requires individuals who can understand and use the source code. That requires staff, like Aestiva's own production staff, knowledgeable in programming in the HTML/OS and Power Office environment. To help you achieve operational independence you will want to purchase Aestiva's development environment and have a set of programmers trained in programming and provide them projects to ensure they gain the experience needed to maintain, improve, and extend these kinds of applications.
